Coming To You From The Couch

There was an extended time in my life where I wanted to be on the couch more than anywhere else; that time seems so far away now. As I write this post, I am into my second day of no training, and the first day of taking my knee recovery seriously. I went to Target (said the a French sounding ending) and picked up a new reusable ice pack that has a strap. I also have on my compression brace. I will alternate between the two for the next few days and spend as much time on the couch as possible.

I am wearing an Ace Brand sleeve, but I am curious if there is something better out there? Is compression pretty much the same across the board? Additionally, does anyone have any icing techniques or tricks?

Beyond ice and compression, I am continuing my intake of fish oil and glucosamine. I have had both of these supplements recommended to me, so I take them once a day with food. I just want to do whatever I can to get this thing healed up, and be able to go beyond 8 miles without pain.

Behind my little rehab, I don't have much going on. I am mostly just providing my dogs with a consistent lap to sleep on. I am also going to catch up on worthless TV, which is somewhat exciting. I am sure I will be going stir-crazy in about an hour. Wish me luck.

What are you watching this weekend/week?

Any other tips or tricks you know for recovery/rehab?

Anyone else taking some much needed time off?

  1. I was thinking about doing fish oil, but never did. No time off for me, FINALLY time on! Good luck getting through the down time...do you like cross word puzzles? Sudoku? :)

    1. Haha... Crossword more, but I am oddly good at killing time. Luckily I have a few days of football ahead!

I am jealous that you are on the opposite side of the spectrum. I am craving a run already.

  2. I am at the end of my 2nd day off. The legs needed some recovery time after all the work they put in. Feels good but I am dying already for some action. My icing technique is the old fashion ice bath! Two twenty pound bags of ice and a timer, plus a good hooded sweatshirt! Does the trick every time. Good luck!

  3. Heard of the ice bathes; how Long do you sit in them? Seems like a lot of work though. I just got an ice pack to centralize the cold right on the injury sight. I am alternating every hour r so between ice and compression. Only icing for 15 minutes at a time.

    1. If I had my Xbox with me, I think I would be in a much better mental state!

  5. Ice baths definitely will help, you sit in them about 10-15 minutes, it's hard at first but I live by them for long run recovery (anything over 10 miles).
What kind of dogs do you have?
I hope your knee pain gets better soon! I know it's driving you crazy not to be able to train right now!

  6. I know exactly how you feel. I used to just love being lazy now it's so hard when something is holding me back, however, we all know, it's worth it in the end to recover properly!

  7. oh man, injuries SUCK!! keep icing like a demon, u can also try some easy self-massage if the area isn't too inflamed still. depending on the injury, if u have access to an ultrasaound machine that would also help a lot. u can sometimes talk to a sports med place and they may let u sneak in there for just some 10 min sessions sans charge if they are cool. other than that, IB it up, try to stay sane because u kno in the end taking the time to heal up right is wat's gonna pay off the most!
